YouView Box

YouView is a UK internet television service that provides its customers with an improved choice of channels and superior viewing experience via its hybrid set-top box.

The Benefits of YouView

YouView gives its customers a superior channel selection by providing them with over 70 digital channels to choose from. YouView has a broad range of channels to suit everyone’s preferences, including: news channels, shopping channels, entertainment channels and radio channels. In addition, YouView provides it users with catch up TV for the past seven days.

YouView supports HD (high definition) TV which means that its customers can enjoy an improved viewing experience with sharper images and clearer sound.

A YouView box allows you to record, pause and rewind television programmes. This means you’ll never have to miss your favourite show! Using the record feature you can record up to two programmes whilst watching another one.

YouView also has a range of additional features that make it easy to get the most out of your YouView box. Extra features include TV guides, reminders and parental controls.

What to take into consideration

  • If you think that you will benefit from having a YouView Box, the major decision that you are faced with is whether you purchase the device outright or get it on a contract.

  • Purchasing one as part of a BT or TalkTalk contract can be beneficial as there is no upfront cost. However, it may be cheaper for you in the long term to purchase the YouView box outright, especially if you do not think that you will benefit from any of additional features that TalkTalk and BT provide.

  • If you are thinking of purchasing a YouView box as part of a contract, you should take a look at the services offered by YouView’s major competitors: BT Vision Sky Anytime and TiVo. This especially the case if you are planning on upgrading your broadband services at the same time.

  • It is recommended that you have at least 3MB/s fast broadband. In addition, it is worth mentioning that if you have a monthly data allowance, anything you watch on demand or on catch up your YouView box will count towards your data usage.

  • You’ll also need good digital coverage for YouView to work. Fortunately, most of the UK has digital coverage. However, you can always check digital availability in your area online if you are uncertain.

  • If your router is over 2 meters away from where you want the set top box to be, you will need to get a longer Ethernet cord. These can be economically purchased online or at a local hardware store.

Where to Buy

There are currently two ways to purchase a YouView Box. Firstly, you can receive one for free when you take out a landline and broadband contract from either TalkTalk or BT, which are the only two providers, so far, to link up with YouView.

Alternatively, you can purchase a YouView box from a retailer for a one-off payment of at least £197.99. YouView boxes are available from a range of independent shops and high street retailers, like John Lewis and Currys. You can also purchase a YouView box online from Amazon.
